Why I Love Grading – Oct 2013

By Serena  (SBS Turner Valley, Canada) I have just finished grading a student’s work.In some parts they did fantastic; in others, there were serious challenges. After grading their work, I wrote them feedback: “You did this great”; “This is what I want you to work on, this is how you will get more depth.”And at the […]

The Importance of the WHY Question in Inductive Bible Study – July 2013

This is a “Back to Basics” reminder. I want to focus on the Why question as the bridge between observation and interpretation. (See original handout used in the SBS called, The School of Biblical Studies: the Basics Of Bible Study. This handout is found under The Method in the Menu: it is called Overview […]

The Word & the Spirit – May 2013

I had a conversation recently with a YWAM leader about lecturing in SBS.  The conversation went something like this: Me: “How did your lecture go with our SBS Students?” Him: “Good, but we didn’t cover the whole book, in fact we only got a few chapters in, but it went well.” Me: “Why did you […]

Writing as an SBS Staff – April 2013

As an 18 year old, I felt called to missions, but was unsure how to pursue that calling, the only training I had had was a DTS.After much prayer and discussion with others, it was hard to escape the fact that knowing something of the Bible would be important. How could I hope to explain […]

Becoming Stronger – Feb. 2013

“What doesn’t kill me makes me stronger.” This quote by Nietzsche, has always annoyed me a little bit. There is truth to this statement, and I do love hearing true stories of resilience, but I don’t think it is completely accurate. What doesn’t kill you can make you stronger or it can leave you injured, crippled, sickly, maimed […]

Evaluation and Debriefing – Jan 2013

Growing as a School through Evaluation and Debriefing Howard Hendricks says that “An unexamined life isn’t a life worth living.” Is this the way we live each day? How much do we examine or evaluate our growth; do we remain stagnant in our learning and development spiritual, physically, and mentally? In life it is easy […]

Jephthah and Knowing The Bible – Jan 2013

Jephthah is one of those Bible characters that really intrigues me.  Despite having a difficult start in life he became a national hero.  He reminds me a little of King David in that he learned much of his military and leadership expertise while in exile yet grew to command the respect of the nation. His […]

A Good Chart – Sept 2012

What constitutes a good chart?  What makes one students’ charts an ‘A’, while another students’ charts a ‘B’?  This is the eternal question that we always must wrestle with in the SBS.  The constant complaint from students that graders are not consistent from one to another is like the sound of nails on a chalkboard […]

Language And Missions – Jan 2012

Bridges for Eternity: the place of language learning in cross-cultural missions ‘I’m called to missions but I’m not called to learn the language’, ‘why would I want to spend time learning the language when I could be doing evangelism?’, ‘the whole world should just speak English’, ‘they speak English anyway so why do I need […]
